One of the biggest challenges I think we face right now is our own hubris. We seem to have two major blindspots.
Firstly, we think that because we know a lot, we know everything. Faced with uncertainty, we make things up from what we know, or guess, and then assert. In hindsight, we may look foolish, but that's, well, later. We deal with it then.
Secondly, shifting baselines. We tend to look at things within the scope of our own lifetimes. When we sapiens have been here for around 3000 average lifespans so far, that's a pretty limited view. We don't get smarter, we just acumulate more knowledge. See above.
In another few lifetimes, our descendants will look back on now and see more accurately what we are currently guessing at. (I suspect we may be a little embarrased by that report card)
So what do we do when we don't know what to do?
Trust who you are, what you believe to be true, and that you matter.
