
In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” prisoners have been chained since childhood in a dark cave, forced to face a blank wall. Behind them burns a fire, and between the fire and prisoners is a raised walkway where people carry objects, casting shadows on the wall in front of the prisoners. These prisoners can only see these shadows and hear echoes, which they believe to be reality since it’s all they’ve ever known.
