I find it instructive to observe the various acts of hanging on when it is clear the time to let go is long past. To watch as walls are built around what we have even as it dissolves into redundancy and those whose interests the walls are being constructed around display little idea as to what they want to do with what they have other than to hold onto it.

Here in the UK, there is a morbid fascination as the Post Office melts away under examination. Those who have known what has been happening for the last couple of decades obfuscate and hide behind the shields of expensive lawyers in order not to do something but to hide, as the plans to allow the scandal to melt away gently were upended by a well-made drama that made a story out of the scandal.

And to watch as efforts are made in the dog days of a failed political administration to suggest vigour by professing shock at the story, going for photo ops in Ukraine, and tagging along in a military intervention in the Middle East that has q…
