I suspect we find ourselves inside the walls for two reasons: we feel we belong or are trapped there. Sometimes, perhaps, there is an element of Stockholm syndrome, where we form a relationship of necessity with those holding us hostage. Belonging is a fundamental need, second in Maslow’s hierarchy after the fundamental needs of security and survival, yet we treat it as a commodity.
