Sat here on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District, the horizon is not that far away and, in fact, there are several to choose from. Opposite me, the horizon is obscured by a low cloud, forty-five degrees to my right, the early morning sun dapples distant fells.
The Lake District is like that, and it will change in a moment.
It feels like a good metaphor for our lives right now. here in the UK, our nearest horizon is shrouded in carefully constructed stories designed for short-term influence by those who have no idea what is really happening and prefer to focus on things that they can later deny when the political weather changes.
At the same time, the clouds are gathering on the further horizon in the form of elections in Europe and The USA that will create the weather that really matters, and in which the rumble of right-wing thunder can be heard that will put the wider impact of what happens in the UK into perspecti…
